Understanding Refractory Failure
Sulfur can combine with lime and iron oxides found in some refractory materials and can reduce material strength. In the presence of moisture, sulfur also could form sulfurous and sulfuric acids, which could react with the basic components of a refractory material.
Alkali such as sodium (Na) and potassium (K) can chemically react with silica found in some refractory materials.
Hydrocarbons, in conjunction with a reducing atmosphere ), can react with iron oxides and form large carbon deposits in the refractory material. This eventually could cause a spall on the refractory surface.
The Right Stuff: Material Considerations
When applying removable/reusable insulation blankets at operating temperatures higher than 1000 F, you need to exercise certain precautions. Many of these applications also have high vibration, such as those found on diesel engine exhaust systems or around steam or gas-fired power-generating turbines. Many of these applications operate continuously where the surface to be insulated is between 1000 and 1200 F, with spikes up to 1500 F.
Inconel® or monel wire is sometimes used in very corrosive environments.
Monolithic Solution
Basic refractory castables includes chrome ore base products with hydraulic cement binders. These compositions have outstanding strength and abrasion resistance and resist chemical attack and thermal spalling.Typical uses include patching for rotary kiln lining.
Basic castables also come in the form of chrome-magnesite mixes with chemical air setting bonds. They can be cast, rammed or gunned and have many uses.Other high strength, air setting magnesite castable have bonding system which can give them extremely high hot strength.
A series of gun mixes are available for hot electric furnace maintenance. These range in magnesia content from 60% to 95% and are available with or without a phosphate bond.Gunning mixes of this kind are designed to provide an even feed in a batch gun,wet up well and stick to a hot furnace wall.
